Kyrenia/Bellapais - Every Tuesday & Friday

We will take you on an historic journey into Northern Cyprus, which has now been occupied for nearly 30 years.

Stop for a short coffee break at Chirokitia, thought to be the earliest settlement on Cyprus, dating back from 7000BC.

Visit the Abbey of Bella Pais, and drive through villages. The abbey is very important as Laurence Darrell (a famous English artist) lived there. The abbey itself is built on the edge of a cliff and is protected by a fortification wall and a moat on the less precipitous sides.

We will then take you to the picturesque harbour of Kyrenia, which sits at the foot of the Pentadaktylos (translates in English to 5 fingers) Mountains. The city was founded by the Achaeans and there are references to the Kingdom of Kyrenia in historical times.

The Hellenistic shipwreck found off the ancient harbour, known as the "Kyrenia Ship" is incontrovertible evidence for the commercial relations and trade routes of the period: Samos, Kos, Rhodes, Asia Minor coast and Kyrenia. There is reference to it in 1222, when it was abolished by the Franks, though it was revived in the 17th century. An early Christian cemetery with graves cut into the rock is preserved at Chrysokava.

Whilst here you will have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing lunch and admire the breathtaking scenery. Lunch will cost around £8 per person in any of the harbour restaurants and on the return journey there will be a short coffee break to give people time to stretch their legs.
